Jiri Hietanen

I have worked since 1997 on solving the same problem: how we can have successful Open BIM data exchange in the AEC/FM Industry in real projects, with real people. It has been a wild ride, that has finally led to Simplebim and Dataflows. In the Simplebim community I will continue to explore this topic and help everyone best I can. We are never ready, but we are getting closer all the time!

  • Filling openings of demolished doors and windows

Recently this interesting use case for dataflows came up with a customer. The setting is a renovation project where some doors get removed, which leads to two tasks: removing/demolishing the door a...

  • Running dataflows faster!

When you have a small model you can just run dataflows, sections and steps without thinking too much about performance, but with large models the performance can have a big influence on the usabili...

  • Identifying objects, in general and in projects

One of the most basic things in BIM is identifying objects, i.e. asking what an object represents. When an object is identified it becomes ‘machine readable’, which is the big difference between BI...

  • Hitting the target

You may have seen a nice Simplebim dataflow that does amazing things in a demo or in one of Gio's videos. Then you have tried to do the same using your own models, but were not able to make it work...

  • Start with a clean slate

One of the basic features of Simplebim is the trimming functionality. The first thought is to remove (trim) everything you don't need from the model. This way you won't waste any time examining, va...

  • Past, present and future of Jiri

None of this was planned. I was probably the first kid in our school to get a computer (Commodore VIC20) around 1983 and have been interested in computers ever since. But when it came time to choos...

  • Count everything, but only once!

When you calculate anything from a model it is important that you calculate everything you need to calculate and that you don't double-count anything. Simplebim can help you prepare your model for ...

  • Creating "hybrid groups" using dataflows

In Simplebim we have two kinds of groups; manual and rule based. Manual groups are great for ad-hoc work, because it is super easy to just drag&drop objects to the groups. Rule based groups are als...
