Meet Tomi: From Railways to Boats to BIM Data Featured
Hi, my name is Tomi, and I've been working at Datacubist for 5,5 years now. I was actually the first person Jiri and Sakari hired outside the company! My official role is Sales Manager and in practice I take care of licensing, pricing, invoicing, and payments.
Throughout my career, I've worked for many different companies, mostly in people- and sales-oriented roles. Social connections and selling have always been my strong suits. I enjoy working with numbers just as much as I enjoy interacting with people. Ideally both at the same time!
I graduated as a Civil Engineer at the Technical University of Tampere. My main subjects were production economics and paper industry; I wrote my thesis for one of Finland's largest paper companies, UPM-Kymmene Ltd.
My very first job was at the Helsinki engineering office of the Finnish national railways, designing braking systems for new cargo and passenger wagons. At the time, younger engineers were already using 3D design software, while others still worked on traditional drawing tables: a real mix of old and new.
Then I moved into logistics, planning train routes from paper mills to end customers or harbors: defining wagon types, train lengths, loading and unloading processes, locomotive requirements, wagon circulation and tight schedules in a busy railway network - while also negotiating pricing with customers: for sure there was a lot of coordination and data there!
After that, I joined Securitas Technology, a security and safety company providing solutions for shopping centers, business parks, airports, harbors, arenas, and office buildings. I was involved in all phases: from early planning through construction and into facility management. BIM and data processing were not used at the time - and, looking back, structured and automated ways to handle information like fire classifications and safety zones would certainly have made our life easier! My role, once again, focused on customer relationships, pricing, and agreements.
I then spent seven years in Thailand, co-owning a construction company to build large, detached houses as well as a few hotels. I handled logistics, sales, and site supervision. That was my most hands-on experience with building construction. At the time, designers mainly worked with PDF drawings, and digital workflows were still limited. Hopefully, digitalisation and structured data will continue to grow there as well.
Before joining Datacubist, I was also a private entrepreneur building sea kayaks and sailing boats in Kokkola, Finland. Kokkola is well known for its boat industry, and we also manufactured components for larger companies like Finnmaster Ltd.
Today, I truly enjoy my work at Datacubist. We have a great team, and together we daily do our best to support our partners and customers, helping them use Simplebim as efficiently as possible and get real value from it.
I'm glad to be part of this Community - and happy to connect!

You’ve had quite a journey, and I imagine you’ve been sampling all the local specialities along the way 😏
Five years already! It’s been such a pleasure chatting with you, whether by email or over a good meal 🥩
Tomi, you forgot to mention you like Belgium Beer. It is great to read your story “up till now”. We all make a fun and great journey, sometimes with tears, but most of all with a great smile on our faces. IFC, Simplebim, and all the social connections we get from it, it is fun. For me as a reseller it has been always an enrichment to be connected to the Simplebim-Team. THX. btw when my old car has an NON-ifc-issue with the braking systems i can call you..good to know that👍.
