BIM experts among us: Ever wished we could "clone" our own expertise?

Not the people, of course: "the logic". The ability to turn a raw model into data everyone can use.

→ Simplebim 12 launches on Monday 19 October, and it comes very close to that.

While Simplebim 11 introduced BIM Dataflows to automate model data processing, Simplebim 12 takes the next step by scaling that automation across models, projects, teams, and time: Dataflows prepared by the BIM experts can now easily serve an entire organization.

Before the release, let's take a closer first, guided look at its four major developments - and what they bring to everyday work:

  • The Base Model automatically standardizes property structures and values, making BIM data easier to find, understand, and enrich.
  • Simplebim Cloud publishes Dataflows into automated pipelines, processing new or updated models centrally and at scale.
  • The new 3D window brings faster loading, smoother navigation, clearer visualization, Reveal mode, and far more intuitive clipping planes.
  • Simplebim AI Expert provides guidance on Simplebim tools, Dataflows, and workflows directly inside the application.

Here they are in detail, with what each means for our daily work.

1. The Base Model: a pre-set standardized foundation for scalable work

Models vary by discipline, authoring software, naming convention, modelling habits, project history, and many other understandable reasons. For downstream professionals, this means extra work to adapt the models to their purposes.

Simplebim "Base Model" brings to life the idea of automatically standardizing the data in all BIM models - no matter from which discipline or modelling software they come!

The Base Model helps get a first cleaning up and structuring of the model data sent by the modellers.

Standardize properties and values. Always!

The Base Model is practically a ready-made dataflow with pre-set steps that:

  • find all useful information already present in the model - no matter how it is encoded in the model;
  • make this information understandable - by standardizing properties and values;
  • organize the result from the user's viewpoint, ready to solve their use case!

Need to merge more models? Then, let's apply the Base Model to each of them before merging. Browsing, understanding, and using the data of the final merged model becomes easier and more powerful.

Enrich. To get even more out of it.

Standardized properties and values open the door to automated, repeatable enrichment. Enrichment is possible through:

  • one or more enrichment packages that come with Simplebim. These are ready-made sequences of pre-set dataflow steps, that solve fundamental use cases such as cost estimation, design management, schedule management, site management, and facility management;
  • a  user-made dataflow, that enriches the data according to the current needs.

→ From messy data to every use case. Step by step.

The Base Model was first announced in Maria's presentation in Tallinn, remember? Let's watch that again here.

2. Simplebim Cloud: the experts' logic, on every model

Hundreds of projects? Thousands of models? And they update again and again?

Running them singularly is not an option. For this, the Simplebim Team at Datacubist has developed Simplebim Cloud.

Simplebim Cloud is not a Cloud storage! It's an execution engine designed for large-scale processing.

How does it work?

  1. The best BIM expert builds and tests dataflows in Simplebim Desktop, then publishes them to the Cloud.
  2. In Cloud, the best BIM expert creates pipelines, chooses the dataflows, and connects the Company data storage.
  3. Whenever new raw models are uploaded by anyone in the team, and whenever they update, they are automatically processed. And the results are sent where needed.

In plain words, a Pipeline is simple: a new IFC appears in this folder → run this Dataflow → save the result there. Colleagues, project teams, and customers benefit without a Desktop license and without needing to know any Dataflow logic, so the work of one BIM experts reaches everyone who needs it.

Connections currently support SharePoint (OneDrive) and Dropbox, with more planned. Named file locations make the same Dataflow run on the PC and in the Cloud: give a location a name, then map that name to the actual folder in each environment.

Usage is token-based. More complex Dataflows use more tokens per run, and larger packages and longer commitments lower the cost per token. Simplebim Cloud is available to users with a valid Simplebim Desktop license, and an initial number of tokens to try it is included.

3. Simplebim AI Expert: help always available

Always at hand inside Simplebim: ready to answer questions about tools and Dataflows, and in multiple languages. If something is not documented, it says so instead of guessing, and helps reach the Support Team.

4. The new 3D window: quicker, clearer, a pleasure to work with

A new 3D window, rebuilt from the ground up. Models open faster. Panning, zooming, and rotating are smoother, also on large models. Objects and Spaces are easier to read, thanks to new rendering and lighting.

Two enhancements to use daily:

  • Reveal mode: the selected objects or group stay fully visible while the rest of the model turns transparent, so we keep the context.
  • Clipping planes now have a handle we place and move directly. Measurements snap more naturally to geometry.
